As the bakery business broke grounds in the Philippines, it was not long that the Chinese began building their own paths in this food industry. With the Cantonese Chinese, the Chinese bakery trade started to get a strong foothold as part of the eating culture in this country.
With the number of Chinese bakeries gradually increasing in a country slowly picking up and rediscovering its strength and national identity, Mr. Liong Ah Wai foresaw that only with unity and bonding will the industry and its people grow and prosper together with the tides of change and development. With perseverance and will, he encouraged the creation of a group that became the Filipino-Chinese Bakery and Hopia Factory Association, Incorporated.
This humble group focused in championing causes for the bakery industry that paved the way for securing import allocation for flour. Though with this major accomplishment, several challenges and road-blocks, like the restricted sourcing of flour and a hostile environment, left the group vulnerable and unable to move forward.
After a short lapse of three years, the Filipino-Chinese bakery owners decided to create a stronger group and formalize the organization to address pertinent obstacles facing the industry. The consensus to form a new group gave birth to the Filipino-Chinese Bakery Association, Incorporated in 1966.
To work for the collective interest for the bakery Industry was the goal of this motivated group of businessmen. This brought about creating focus groups in coordinating with various government agencies, promoting harmony, unity and strong relationships with allied businesses and strengthening the core of members.
With these robust undertakings, the organization has grown into well-established, respected and recognized force in the Philippine bakery world. Their influence has reached into the far ends of the archipelago and has encouraged more members to join their cause for a better and united approach to building business and hopes.
As for all hopes, seeing it come into fruition is like having your cake and eating it too. In 2006, FCBAI inaugurated its Technical Baking Center. This is a major cornerstone for the group indeed. Whilst under the inspiring leadership and vision of Immediate Past President Mr. Ching Suy Eh, FCBAI began plans to set up a technical center that would be a principal contribution to the group’s effort in growing with the technological advancements in baking.
The final unveiling of this project continued with Mr. James Chua who proudly took the helm of leadership and together with him, dedicated members carried this inspiration into realization.
Now, the new baking center plays a vital role in the organizations activities. Baking seminars and demonstrations are constantly being held in this venue. Complete with up-to-date baking equipment, it is the most effective way of imparting knowledge and greater understanding and appreciation of the Bakery Association, Incorporated is living proof that dreams do come true—with a little faith, lots of hard work and a solid vision.
